Nigel calls for a ban on Alco-Pops

Posted by nigelknowles on August 30, 2007

Nigel Knowles has welcomed the Governments National Alcohol strategy involving a National Review on the relationship between alcohol price, promotion and harm. The role of advertising will also be investigated. Nigel has submitted a Petition to the new Home Secretary Jacqui Smith calling for a ban on Alco-Pops.

Although such a ban is not policy, Nigel believes there is a link between young people who drank under age and the increasing problems of their consumption by the sale of Alco-Pops. Nigel says, “I’m concerned at under age drinking and the link to anti-social behaviour.”

“Alco-Pops are bad news and problems are caused to young drinkers themselves by becoming hooked and ill on Alco-Pops and illegally consumed alcohol. I applaud the work already being undertaken by the Police and County Council Trading Standards Division to curb under age drinking. I welcome also the National Review into alcohol related crime and disorder, and wish to thank those local people in Wyre Forest who signed my Petition”.

Hospital Buses

Posted by nigelknowles on August 29, 2007

The bus service throughout Worcestershire is not good enough and not fit for purpose. I have spoken with many people who need to travel by bus between the County Hospitals and find it extremely difficult. I have called on County Council and the Health Authorities to improve the link between Wyre Forest, Worcester and Redditch. There is an added problem for cancer patients living in Wyre Forest who have to travel to Wolverhampton for radiotherapy treatment. Bus travel for NHS patients should be a PRIORITY. Also, lets end car parking charges at Hospital Car parks – Patients first, not car park income, particularly now that the Health Trusts are no longer in budget deficit.

Please sign the online Radiotherapy Petition for a Unit to be placed at Kidderminster Hospital. Over 4500 signatures collected to date.

Blood Donor sessions at Churchfields, Kidderminster

Posted by nigelknowles on August 24, 2007

Today is the day! Why not turn up to the Methodist Church, Churchfields, Kidderminster and give blood? If you drive up the Ring Road past St Mary’s Church, you will see the Methodist Church. Turn left through the Horsefair and left again. Fill in the form, wait your turn and give a pint (metric equivalent). I couldn’t say it will be the most exciting hour of your life, but you will be doing something very special and helpful for others. I’m a novice with about 14 donations. My friend Roy gave 120 plus before he was “retired” at 70 years of age. If you can’t make today between 1pm and 3pm, ring 0845 7711711 or find out more at www.blood.co.uk and make an appointment for another day. I’ll see you there. I’ll be the one reading the Tony Hancock sketch “A pint! But that’s an armful!”

TORY TAX CUTS FOR THE RICH WHILE THE POOR STILL PAY

Posted by nigelknowles on August 17, 2007

John Redwood in the Tories’ “Competitive Challenge” Review has called for the abolition of Inheritance Tax. This would leave an annual £4 billion gaping hole in the public finances.

Would local Tory candidate Mark Gernier care to tell us how many less: nurses, doctors, teacher, social workers and carers there would be in Wyre Forest to fund this tax giveaway to the rich?

Under Labour in 2010, only 6% of estates will pay any inheritance tax.

Don’t let let Mark Garnier and John Redwood take vital funds from your schools, Kidderminster Hospital, your carers and your police service to fund tax cuts for their rich friends.

Middle Income earners will get nothing from this except cuts in their services

LABOUR IS COMMITTED TO QUALITY, WELL-FUNDED PUBLIC SERVICES NOT JUST TAX CUTS FOR THE FEW RICH TORIES.

SAME OLD TORIES

Tories Announce the End of Family Rights and Working Rights For British Workers

Posted by nigelknowles on August 13, 2007

David Cameron thought that the Tory Party could survive without Thatcherism, he was wrong.

John Redwood MP, Cameron’s chief policy advisor, announced that the Tories would “Sweep away £14 billion of red tape for businesses”. At least Redwood is honest. The “Red Tape” that Redwood describes is in fact the vast range of new rights that working people have acquired under Labour in the last 10 years. A gift to bad employers.

Local Tory Candidate Mark Garnier, his leader David Cameron, and John Redwood want YOU to LOSE:

the right to paid holidays, the right to a minimum wage, the right to work in a safe and healthy envirnoment, maternity rights, the right to flexible working (vital for many Mums in Wyre Forest!) Oh, and they want to make it easier for British companies to make British workers redundant.

All working people will lose their employment rights, and many would lose wages under the Tories! Be afraid of the Tories, very afraid!

ONLY THE TORIES WOULD STAB BRITISH WORKERS IN THE BACK LIKE THIS, AND SEND BRITISH JOBS ABROAD!!

REMEMBER 12% UNEMPLOYMENT AND £2.00 AND HOUR JOBS UNDER THE TORIES – WE DO!

ONLY LABOUR WILL PROTECT  FAMILY RIGHTS AND WORKING RIGHTS FOR BRITISH WORKERS

Up-date – Petition for a Radiotherapy Unit at Kidderminster Hospital

Posted by nigelknowles on August 8, 2007

We now have over 4,100 signatures! A great response from the people of Wyre Forest and nearby towns and cities. Urgent Care Centre at Kidderminster Hospital I wrote to Health Secretary Alan Johnson MP and Prof Darzi  calling for a Radiotherapy Unit and an Urgent Care Centre. The pilot Urgent Care Centre (UCC) at Kidderminster Hospital due to be started in the Autumn is good news. I want to see the UCC idea properly installed at Kidderminster Hospital and shall keep lobbying. Flood ReliefI wrote to John Healey MP Minister, asking for him to ask the EU for special relief money to help, amongst other areas, Wyre Forest and Worcestershire. Mr Healey has agreed to do that on behalf of Her Majesty’s Government.
