Statement from Labour’s Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Wyre Forest, Nigel Knowles
“It is with great sadness that the Labour Party announces the death at the age of 59 of former Councillor, John Gretton who died on 15th March 2007.
John had been suffering from cancer, but until very recently, he was actively engaged in Labour Party politics.
John served on Wyre Forest District Council and Worcestershire County Council. He always maintained his best moment was being one of the County Council planners who voted to throw out the application for an Incinerator at the Sugar Beet site in Kidderminster.
John always put the local community first. He wanted to stand for Labour at the District Elections in May. We had put out one leaflet for him in which he urged everyone in Wolverley to oppose any further application to develop Drakelow Tunnels.
We offer our condolences to his daughter Charlotte and all of John’s family. He will be greatly missed as a man and politician. John was an extremely sharp politician who was exceptional at pinpointing the real issue of any political situation.
I would like to thank all of his friends in Wolverley, particularly at the “Queens Head” who helped John during his illness. John remained resolute throughout. He never complained, and wanted everyone to know about the wonderful service he received from the NHS, local doctors, KEMP, and McMillan nurses.
John Gretton was a rare person who made a real difference to what we did locally in the Labour Party.
He was extremely principled and straightforward, a good friend and a great advocate for democratic socialist politics”.
